Gogo (Grandmother) from rural KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa

This is a Gogo (Grandmother) from rural KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. She is taking care of six grandchildren while their parents try to earn a living. Poverty is a big problem in the area. The locals have to make do with what they have in their natural surroundings.  This house is built from rocks, tree branches, poles and mud. The roof is a Tin sheet roof. For water proofing they use cow dung, it kind of works if it’s not raining very hard. You can see there is rain damage on the left hand side that they covered with a plastic sheet. This will be repaired with cow dung and rocks again at a later stage.

Life is a challenge in rural areas.
