The Kosi Bay
lake system consists of four large lakes and a series of inter-connecting
channels that eventually drain via a sandy estuary into the Indian Ocean. The
lakes are separated from the ocean by a strip of forested sand dunes. The
system is characterised by grassland, interspersed with lakes, pans, streams,
marshes and swamps. The swamp forests that are found in this area are the
largest in the country.
The local
fishermen have a small piece of the 4th Lake where they can build
their fish traps. These are ingenious traps are setup to take advantage of both
High tide and Low tide. The traps are
the property of each family and they have been in the family for generations.
These images
are of a Fisherman that is clearing out his trap. The fisherman uses a spear to
spike the fish. They have a lot of fish in the trap and he must catch them one
at a time. He uses the goggles to see beneath the water to spear the fish. It
takes a lot of skill and patience to spear all the fish.
