10 things portrait photographers should know about their craft

, , No Comments

People are one of the most popular subjects for photography, so let’s take a look at some of the most important things photographers should consider when shooting a portrait.

1. Subjects respond to you and their environment
If you want a nice relaxed portrait then it’s essential that you take a friendly, relaxed approach to your subject, try to make the shoot fun. Many inexperienced subjects feel a little awkward or uncomfortable at the thought of being photographed and it’s your job to put them at their ease.
You don’t need to turn into a stand-up comedian, but a smile won’t go amiss. It’s also a good idea to explain what you’re doing and why as you go along.
You don’t need to go into technical details, but nice positive comments like, ‘I’m going to shoot from this angle because it accentuates your lovely cheekbones’ and ‘if you tilt your head that way the light makes your eyes sparkle’ are helpful.
