We were on assignment in Varanasi, India, shooting Holy
Sadhu Babas. Varanasi is the oldest, permanently inhabited city in the world and
is the most Holy place for the Hindu religion. People come from around the
world on pilgrimage to Varanasi. Every day they have two religious ceremonies
at the river Ganges, one at sunrise and one at sunset. The ceremonies are
spread along the river in various spots. An average of 150 000 people
attend every ceremonies at one of the Ghats. There are millions of devout
Hindus moving all the time around town and on the river banks. This made it
impossible for us to move around on the shore, with our camera and light gear.
We opted rather to use a river taxi that made our lives a lot easier. It also
made us very mobile and able to get to all the spots and we could leave our
gear safely in the boat.
Diamond, our boatman, got to be a very important member of
our team and an endless source of information. One morning on a shoot he asked
if I could “make” him a picture. On the way back we stopped to shoot this image
for him. He was over the moon with the images and we were also happy with the
result above.
Here is a typical day with Diamond rowing and a Baba with us on the way to a shoot.
